Petition asks for ban on firecrackers on the occasion of Diwali in Odisha

Surendra Panigrahi, a social worker on Thursday filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Orissa High Court asking for ban on bursting of fire crackers during Diwali. This comes days after a Delhi court imposed ban of firecrackers in Delhi and NCR.

Panigrahi had made chief secretary, secretaries of law and Home departments and DG police as parties in the petition.

“Apex court has banned bursting of fire crackers on the occasion of Diwali in Delhi and NCR. I have filed a similar PIL seeking ban on use of firecrackers in Odisha during Diwali,” said the petitioner.

“I have made Chief Secretary, Secretaries of Law and Home departments and DG police as parties in my PIL,” he further said.

Earlier this week, the top court banned the sale of firecrackers in Delhi and NCR till November 1, 2017, in an attempt to examine whether firecrackers-free Diwali this year will have a positive impact on the health of people and constantly worsening air quality.
